| It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Past Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Chief Herman “Brad” Rawlings. He held multiple ranks within the firehouse - but he was known best over the years as Chief 2-A. Brad submitted his application to PFVFD on October 3, 1978 and somehow the firehouse was never the same. His life and legacy are ingrained into Company 2 and how we continue to operate today. If you knew Brad - or were ever on a call with him – you knew he expected only the best. He ran a fire scene with precision and never hesitated to make decision. Calvert County was incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated volunteer clocking in thousands of calls... hours.... and leading countless crews. There was never a grey area with Brad - you were either in or you were out - and if you couldn’t give 110% he would let you know. With Brad on the front lines, it was clear he was thinking of every scenario, and executing his knowledge and skills precisely. And back at the firehouse, when you walked in, the station was spotless – the counter tops were clear and clean, the trash cans were empty and the floors were shining (also thanks to Tyrone Jacks and Kerry White). This directly relates to the pride Brad had for PFVFD. You best believe he wasn't just issuing the command - he was always there to jump in and personally help execute tasks and projects.
From 1978 until 2006, Brad gave all of his energy and knowledge to PFVFD. His commitment is displayed currently on our walls where he was the top call runner for multiple consecutive years in a row. He led without fear and he also knew how to be a father-like figure to those under him. He was often found guiding members in their personal lives, professional situations and everything in between. If you were off track or out of line, he let you know. The “front room” was often a place Brad would give his infamous “face-to-face” words and advice. Brad’s loving and dedicated sister, Vicky Rawlings said: “Brad was a lot of things – Chief 2-A for the Prince Frederick Firehouse, an incredible baseball player, a loyal friend, a man who lived life entirely on his own terms.” “The last few years have been challenging, and not how he would have wanted to live his life. I take comfort in knowing he’s finally at peace and in a better place,” Vicky concluded. We invite you to celebrate Brad’s life and volunteer service to Calvert County on Friday, December 5, 2025.
